Living on Hawai‘i

The largest of the islands, Hawai‘i is also known as “The Big Island” and is home to some of the most wondrous natural environments and resources in the world. From the black sands of Punalu‘u Beach, to awe-inspiring volcanoes, to the lush forests of Hilo and the snow-capped peaks of Mauna Kea, Hawai‘i offers daily opportunities to explore, enjoy the natural world, and create lifelong memories.

Island Weather

The Big Island of Hawaii is diverse in both the terrain and its weather. It is home to 11 out of the 13 different climate zones.  The Hilo side of the island tends to be where the rainfall mostly happens while the Kailua/Kona side is the drier area of the island. If you head to the Volcano or Waimea areas, which are at higher elevations, the temperatures are usually cooler, especially when the sun goes down. Snow can be found at times on the summit of Mauna Kea, as well as the flanks of Mauna Loa or Hualalai.  Annual temperatures in Hilo range from 79-83°F for the high and 64-69°F for the low.  Head over to the Kailua-Kona area; the temperatures range from 81-87°F for the high and 66-73°F for the low.

Outdoor Recreation

Hawai’i Island is also known as the Big Island. Recreation on the Big Island is abundant. There are 14 state parks and a variety of black, white, and green sand beaches to respect and explore. The landscape offers a visual like no other. From water adventures to land adventures, we have the opportunity to experience great moments outdoors.

Island Transportation

There are two main airports on the Big Island; Kona International Airport and Hilo International Airport. Many residents travel in their own vehicles, but there are ride-share services, carpooling options, and the Hele-On Bus Transportation Service. Many people take advantage of riding bicycles as the weather (even when raining) is rider friendly.

Shopping

The Big Island has many shopping options across the island. Pahoa recently welcomed the Puna Kai Shopping Center which is home to numerous stores and businesses. We do have a CostCo on the island as well as other big name retail stores. Weekly Farmer’s Markets are a big deal here as well. No matter what you may be hungry for, you will be able to find it on the Big Island.
