What do you think is the Hawaii Department of Education’s greatest strength?

The Hawaii Department of Education’s greatest strength is the people within. The dedicated teachers and administrators of the HIDOE continue to work hard to deliver the message of aloha and educate the future leaders of Hawaii.

What do you think is the greatest strength about the complex area that you work in? What is your complex area known for?

I believe that the complex area’s greatest strengths are the communities that support our students and schools. We have partnered with our parents/community leaders to ensure students are receiving a quality education in and out of the classroom.

What are some fun activities that individuals enjoy doing outside school hours within the COMPLEX AREA that you represent?

You can never run out of things to do here in the Campbell-Kapolei complex area. Kamakana Ali’i is a beautiful outdoor mall that’s open throughout the week. There are a variety of restaurants and tons of cute shops to check out. Wai Kai is a new recreational venue with restaurants, activities, and a weekly farmers market on Thursdays. There are also a variety of boba shops to choose from. My absolute favorite is Boba Cafe and it just so happens to be less than 5 minutes away from my school!

What do you enjoy most about the students you teach in Hawaii?

My students tend to be very chatty, but they’re also very hard working and respectful. What I enjoy most about my students is that, although they can be talkative, they also know when it’s time to focus and get work done. My favorite thing about my students is that they’re always eager to help/assist their peers and their teachers. I also LOVE when my former students come to my classroom to visit me!

What do YOU enjoy doing in your free time while in Hawaii?

What I love most about the island of Oahu is that there is always something to do and so many beautiful places to see. I love going on sunrise or waterfall hikes, playing spikeball at the beach, and driving to the west side to enjoy the breathtaking view of the sunset. West side beaches are stunning and Nanakuli beach and Makaha beach are just 2 of my favorites.

What’s YOUR favorite local food on your island? How would you describe the food?

It may be basic, but spam musubi is my go-to meal/snack. I would describe it as a slice of fried spam, sandwiched between 2 beds of white rice and wrapped in a piece of nori (seaweed).

What’s your favorite place to eat on your island? What kind of food is it?

Tough question! There are so many great places to eat here but if I had to choose one spot, it would have to be Broke Da Mouth in Kapolei. They serve local and Filipino food that is unique and absolutely mouth-watering! If you’re looking for a cute restaurant to enjoy dinner/happy hour, my favorite spot in Waikiki is Tommy Bahamas (try requesting a rooftop seat at the firepit).
