What do you think is the Hawaii Department of Education’s greatest strength?

I believe the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education’s greatest strength lies in its deep cultural competency and the value it places on Hawaiian language, history, and traditions. This commitment not only honors the Hawaiʻi’s unique heritage but also connects learning to universal core concepts, creating an educational experience that is both culturally grounded and academically rigorous.

What do you think is the greatest strength about the complex are that you work in? What is your complex area area known for?
While I’m not sure what our complex area is best known for, I appreciate the strong sense of teamwork and support within my school. I truly enjoy working alongside such dedicated and collaborative coworkers.

What makes your particular school or office special or distinctive?

For me, special education is unique because of the close, trusting relationships we build with our students and their families. We have the privilege of truly understanding each learner as an individual, tailoring support to their unique strengths, needs, and aspirations.

What are two main challenges you face or teachers in general face as a educator in Hawaii?
Two main challenges educators in Hawaiʻi face are accessing consistent, high-quality professional development that is culturally grounded and addressing the ongoing need and adequate funding to support students and schools.

What are the qualities that make a Hawaii State Department of Education teacher successful?
A successful Hawaiʻi State Department of Education teacher has the willingness and drive to continuously learn, adapt, and grow in order to better serve students. This openness to change ensures they can meet diverse needs and provide the best possible education.

AMAZING, wonderful, unique, the best!

What is unique and/or special about the school you work at? What do you enjoy most about teaching there?
I truly enjoy working alongside such dedicated and caring colleagues every day.

What are some fun activities that individuals enjoy doing outside school hours within the COMPLEX AREA that you represent?

Hiking and the beach.

SO many options but depends on the person.

What do you enjoy most about the students you teach in Hawaii?

My students warmth, resilience, and sense of community. They bring their unique cultures, experiences, and perspectives into the classroom, making learning richer and more meaningful for everyone.

Gotz Grinds food is amazing and delicious!

What’s your favorite place to eat on your island? What kind of food is it?

Easyque/Overeasy breakfast foods and bbq.

What are some housing tips that you could recommend for teachers relocating to Hawaii?

Look on many different sites.

What advice would you give to a new teacher who wants to work in your complex for the Hawaii DOE in general?

My advice is to take the time to really get to know your coworkers and support staff. Building those relationships will give you a strong network of people who are always willing to help and share their knowledge.
