What do you think is the Hawaii Department of Education’s greatest strength?

I believe that Hawai‘i DOE’s greatest strength is its unified, statewide school system, which ensures equitable resources, consistent standards, and culturally responsive education for all students across the islands.

What do you think is the greatest strength about the complex area that you work in? What is your complex area known for?

The Central District’s greatest strength is its strong academic tradition combined with a supportive, close-knit school community. Our complex area is known for fostering student achievement through rigorous academics, robust music and athletic programs, Robotics programs, and a commitment to cultural diversity that reflects the heart of Oʻahu.

What makes your particular school or office special or distinctive?

The first lion dance team in the school system.

What are two main challenges you face or teachers in general face as a educator in Hawaii?

Not getting support as a new teacher and funds for programs.

What are the qualities that make a Hawaii State Department of Education teacher successful?

A successful Hawaii DOE teacher is culturally aware, adaptable, and student-centered, creating an inclusive classroom that meets the needs of diverse learners. They combine strong teaching skills with empathy and collaboration to support both academic and social-emotional growth.

What words would you use to describe your students?

Curious, creative, hardworking, resilient, and diverse

What is unique and/or special about the school you work at? What do you enjoy most about teaching there?

Our school is unique because it serves a diverse community of students from many cultural and economic backgrounds, and we emphasize both academic excellence and cultural pride. What I enjoy most about teaching here is seeing students grow, collaborate, and discover their potential in a supportive and inclusive environment.

What are some fun activities that individuals enjoy doing outside school hours within the COMPLEX AREA that you represent?

LMW friendship concerts, Central district band festival concerts.

What are some fun activities that individuals enjoy doing outside school hours on the ISLAND that you work at?

Spending time with my family and friends

What do you enjoy most about the students you teach in Hawaii?

They bring diverse perspectives, creativity, and a genuine eagerness to learn, which makes every day rewarding and inspiring.

What do YOU enjoy doing in your free time while in Hawaii?

Spending time with family and friends.

What’s YOUR favorite local food on your island? How would you describe the food?

Pioneer saloon’s oxtail plate. It’s Japanese style sauce with braised Oxtail.

What’s your favorite place to eat on your island? What kind of food is it?

Alicia’s Market. Best of two worlds, Chinese roast pork with ahi poke.

What are some housing tips that you could recommend for teachers relocating to Hawaii?

Try networking with people you know that live in Hawaii. They can help possibly help you find a place.

What advice would you give to a new teacher who wants to work in your complex for the Hawaii DOE in general?

Do your PD credits early. Find conferences that has to do with your content area to help recharge your batteries and help you gain more knowledge and ideas that you can use in your classroom.
